Mbale Regional Referral Hospital is a government owned and funded hospital. It is located 250km east of Kampala in the Centre of Mbale City. The Hospital serves a population of over 4.6 million people in 16 districts of Busia, Tororo, Butaleja, Pallisa, Budaka, Mbale, Bududa, Sironko, Manafwa, Namisindwa, Butebo, Kapchorwa, Kibuku, Bukwo, Kween and Bulambuli. Started 1924 as a health Centre and has since grown to a 450-bed capacity Regional Referral hospital.
The hospital has a staff of 359 (85% of the staffing capacity) with 10 specialists accounting for only 40% of the expected number. The hospital private wing has evolved over time to become one of the best performing units in the country. The Hospital serves a population of over 4.6 million people in 16 districts.
